Healthier Weight launches 30 minute, non invasive gastric balloon procedure

One of the UK’s leading medical weight loss companies is offering a quick, effective and non-invasive procedure that can bring about rapid and safe weight loss. 18-04-2008
Inflating a gastric balloon inserted in the stomach has the instant impact of deflating the appetite with patients losing up to 40% of their excess weight as a result of the process. And the procedure can be carried out in around 20-30 minutes – about the time it would take to consume a cappuccino and muffin at lunchtime. A gastric balloon is ideal for patients who have tried many alternative ways to lose weight without success, but would prefer to avoid surgery. The balloon is inserted into the stomach and inflated; reducing stomach capacity and the amount of food a person can comfortably eat so that they feel full on a much reduced food intake. Inserting the balloon is simple and is carried out under light sedation. Using a special endoscope (camera) through the mouth, it is passed down the oesophagus and into the stomach where it is filled with sterile saline (salt water) to produce a feeling of fullness. The absence of a general anaesthetic enables patients to leave hospital after a few hours of observation. The gastric balloon can stay in place for a maximum of 6 months, with most of the weight loss occurring in the first four months. The removal procedure is as simple and painless as the placement. Patients can expect to lose around 35-40% of their excess weight through the procedure. Dr David Ashton, Medical Director of Healthier Weight, said; “Some people who struggle with their weight have tried every diet and weight-loss programme without success. Some are desperate to lose the weight but would prefer to avoid surgery. The gastric balloon can be an effective and safe alternative for them. “ He added: “It is simple, safe and painless to have the procedure. The balloon fills a significant portion of the stomach meaning that the patient must stick to much smaller portion sizes, which means they are taking in fewer calories, making it easier to lose excess weight.” As the number of adults struggling with obesity rises to 1 in 5 in the UK, weight loss surgery is becoming a more sought after solution. However, some patients would prefer to avoid surgery and for them the gastric balloon is the ideal non-surgical alternative.” Healthier Weight uses the most thoroughly researched and tested form of the device - the BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB™). There have been some 60,000 gastric balloons implanted in Europe but to date only around 1,000 in the UK. Healthier Weight believes its experience and standing within the industry will put it at the forefront of providers. The Healthier Weight after care programme is second to none, patients are provided with clear instructions on what to eat and drink in the first two weeks. All patients are encouraged to attend support groups and to enter the 8 week weight loss programme to learn new lifestyle tips on how to maintain their weight loss once the balloon has been removed. A gastric balloon not only helps people lose weight but also reduces the risk of associated co-morbidities of obesity such as diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), arthritis, joint pain, reflux, cardiovascular disease, stroke, various forms of cancer (including prostate, bowel and ovarian), and improves overall quality of life. Healthier Weight is exclusively devoted to the management of overweight and obese patients. No other healthcare organisation in Europe provides such a comprehensive range of obesity surgery and weight loss programmes. Formed in 2005 by Dr David Ashton the Healthier Weight Centres are in London, Birmingham or Manchester.
